Julie was appointed as an Independent Board member in 2014.

She has worked on environmental policy for over 30 years and her areas of expertise include waste and resources policy, sustainable buildings and biotechnology.

She is presently Chair of the Waste and Resources Action Programme (WRAP), a not-for-profit organisation working with governments, businesses and other stakeholders to deliver sustainable resource use and a more circular economy.  She is also Vice Chair of the Institution of Environmental Sciences, and Deputy Chair of the Advisory Committee on Social Science for the Food Standards Agency.

Julie is also an Associate of Green Alliance, having been the Executive Director, and has been a  Non-Executive Director of both The Eden Project and the Environment Agency for England and Wales.

Her book ‘The Secret Life of Stuff’ was published by Vintage Books in January 2011.  She is also a visiting Professor at the University of Surrey’s Centre for Environmental Strategy, and was awarded an MBE in 2001.

She is paid £11,718 a year for three days a month and her appointment runs until 31 January 2021.
